The
History
The mansion is believed to have been built between 1780 and 1803 by George Auldjo of Portlethen. The family operated the local pottery and tile factory on land which formed part of their estate, known at the time as Clayhills. The house was called Ferryhill House from around 1815.
Maps from 1746 refer to the area as 'Fairy Hill' and it is believed that this is where the modern name is derived from.
The original substantial harled granite mansion consisted of two stories, attic and basement and the structure has not changed signifacantly since it was built.
The current owners, George and Julie, took over the hotel in December 2001 and have succeeded in making sympathetic changes to update the facilities, whilst maintaining the historic charm. |
